R45 Claims another two lives...Please help us make the R45 Safer
A tragic accident took place this morning on the R45 when a head on collision occurred around 2am involving one of our local residents. This is a truly sad story with regards to the circumstances surrounding the sequence of events that led up to the collision. This is once again shedding light on the issue surrounding the R45 and the rising death toll.
It is with a deep sense of loss that we have to share the tragic death of our beloved friend and colleague Klaas Maffa. Klaas was a Manager at the MorĂ«son Wine Estate, chairperson of Franschhoek Athletics Club and a Board Member of Boland Athletics. He had an embedded fear of the R45 as he previously just missed the first big accident in Franschhoek in January 2011. Sadly this was his fate. Klaas was requested by his friends at a braai to go to the BP for refreshments and cigarettes as he was the only one who was sober and had not been drinking. It was on his way to the garage when he was struck head on by a gentleman from Johannesburg who was leaving Franschhoek after attending his brother’s wedding earlier in the evening.
Both were killed instantly and the vehicles were strewn across the R45 and ending up in the ditches on opposite sides. It was only when a SAPS vehicle, on routine patrol, drove past the scene and noticed the glass and debris scattered all over the road. Upon investigating, they found the two badly wrecked vehicles in the ditches with each of their occupants deceased.
Our deepest sympathies and condolences to the surviving families of the two gentleman and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
We at Medicare EMR can’t begin to stress the importance of the petition we launched following the first two fatalities. It is of utmost importance that we get your support either via the signing of the online petition @ http://www.mypetition.co.za/index.php?page=sign_petition&petition_id=547 or by physically putting your signature down on the paper campaign with petition books available for signing at the various outlets listed on the campaign posters. We need to have better safety measures implemented on the R45, ensuring a safer road for all who travel on it. Please show your support and sign the petition. We have also made an email address available for businesses to submit individual letters of support in their own words. Please take a few minutes of your day and support this campaign. For business letters please forward the letters to public-safety@medicare-emr.co.za
RIP Klaas Maffa, hamba khahle broer.

Eikestad Nuus Article 8 April 2011 - La Motte Fire Situation
So I can't seem to make sense of this all as it is very confusing, the closure is not real, it's a rumour one minute then it's a reality. Both correspondence received from the municipal manager and Mr Oliver stated in their first sentences that they were either unaware of the closure or that it is a rumour.
Then in the second sentence they admit to being aware of the staff shortages and are intelligently sorting it out. These contracts that expired, expire every year at the same time and one can only wonder what is going on behind the closed doors of management. I am I the only one who has the opinion of that the closure of La Motte Fire Station is a direct result of the staff shortages. Bad planning or mismanagement, either way you have egg on your face. Honesty is the best policy especially in politics, that is if you want the voters to trust you.
Simply cut the salaries of management and make the funds available for things like ESSENTIAL SERVICES and base the managements salaries on performance vs the fat cat salaries they currently earn. Why is it that we the tax payer should foot the bill for people who clearly are not performing on their duties and have failed in service delivery...and this on the eve of elections.
Pull up your socks boys and get it right, it's people's lives at risk here

Franschhoek Wine Valley Dealt Big Blow - Closure of La Motte Fire Sub Station
Last night I was informed whilst requesting back up from the local fire station for a medical emergency, that the station was no longer operational until further notice.
Reasoning:
Due to the seasonal fire fighting contracts coming to an end, Stellenbosch Fire Department is 7 staff members short. What has happened in the past is, the contractors would be split up with permanent staff to man the local La Motte Sub Station.
Solution:
I have been informed that the municipality is going to advertise for the new posts in due time, up and until those posts are filled.
As a resident of the valley, I should inform you that service delivery will be affected by longer response times in event of an fire starting and need to be more vigilant with regards to fire precautions. As owner of Medicare EMR, I can assure you from our side that we will do our best to support our community and Stellenbosch Fire whilst this dilemma is resolved. Please feel free to contact us 24hrs on 074 363 7744 should you require assistance in an emergency.
My suggestion to the community is to share this information with as many local residents and rally up support in assisting the Fire Department with pressurising the Stellenbosch Municipality in getting the positions advertised and filled as quickly as possible. Please contact me should you wish to assist in this matter. As a community we need to stand together in unity to speed up the processes and implementations of local governments service delivery.
Yours in Safety
Garth, Medicare EMR
